Migration Overview

Here at Site5, we offer free migrations to all of our customers.

Another Host to Site5

Below we are going to outline the basic steps that our migration department follows to move your site to our servers.

  • 1) Once you have made the migration request, a ticket is automatically generated and placed in our Migrations department.
Note: You will need to be logged into your Backstage to be able to submit the migration request.
  • 2) From there, one of our highly trained System Administrators will log in to your current account and determine the best possible way to move your sites to our services.
  • 3a) If your current provider uses cPanel (as we do), our administrators will create a full cPanel backup of your account and restore it on our servers.
  • 3b) If your provider does not use cPanel, we will preform our own backup using a wide array of tools and techniques (including zip/tar, ftp, ssh, MySQL exports, etc).
  • 4) We will run checks on all data moved to ensure that nothing was lost during the migration.
  • 5) We will configure our local DNS zone so that all you have to do is point your domains to our domain name servers.
  • 6) That’s it! Once your point your domains to our DNS, your sites will go live (within 24 hours due to domain propagation). We will also monitor your sites for a few days to ensure that no unexpected problems pop-up.

If you have any questions during this process, please feel free to reply to the ticket. We will be more than happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have. We will also update you if we run into any problems on our end while trying to move your sites.

Limitations

  • We will migrate up to 25 cPanel accounts or up to 10 non-cPanel web hosting accounts, free of charge.
  • Email data will not be transferred for non-cPanel migrations, but we will re-create up to 20 e-mail accounts for you.
  • If we are transferring an addon domain from within a cPanel account or we are unable to create a full cPanel backup, we can only transfer it’s files and databases; no e-mail accounts can be migrated.
  • Current customers looking to downgrade to a plan of lesser value are not eligible for a free migration.

  • It would be helpful if there was an “average” timeframe listed for migration fulfillments.

    • Hello Lora,

I agree, that would be ideal. However, there are far too many variables involved in this to give such an estimate. Any timeframe we provided would be a guess at best. However, each migration is started as soon as possible, and completed as quickly and efficiently as possible.

  • Many web hosts set a time limit for free migrations, e.g. sites must be migrated within 30 days of the account being opened. Does that apply to Site 5?

    • Hi Russell,

That’s correct, many hosts do have that restriction in place. However, we do not, even if you have been a customer for several months and decide you wished to have more of your sites moved here, you would just need to submit a migration request and our migration team will get the site moved for you!

  • I have the migration team migrate my 3 sites. They did an excellent job! One was a big site, lots of articles, lots of images. Everything was perfect. They have a very generous free migration offer. Many hosts don’t even do migrations, they make you use an expensive 3rd party or do the work yourself. Others charge you for migrations, or for migrating more than one site. This was a big factor in my choosing Site5 over other hosts. The excellent support was another major factor. I have recommended them to all my clients. I am very happy with all the service and support I have gotten from them so far.

    • That’s fantastic Donna! I’m glad our team was able to help get everything migrated for you with no issues! We’re always glad to help out!
